CN and Tree Canada announce major investment to support Montreal’s tree canopy
May 31, 2017 (Montreal, QC) — In honour of the City of Montreal’s 375th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of Confederation, CN (TSX: CNR) (NYSE: CNI) is making an investment of up to a $1 million to plant tens of thousands of trees in the greater Montreal area. This historic investment in Montreal’s greenspaces will be undertaken with the support, partnership and expertise of Tree Canada, the leading national tree-planting charity in Canada.
In total, tens of thousands of trees will be planted over the course of 10 years along CN’s right of way and on CN’s property throughout the metropolitan area to help increase the region’s urban tree canopy.
Sean Finn, Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer of CN, will formally announce the urban tree planting initiative alongside Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and Tree Canada’s president, Mike Rosen, at a special luncheon event at CN’s corporate headquarters in Montreal. The announcement will follow a special #Canada150 tree planting event Wednesday morning.
“Tree Canada is thrilled to be part of this important initiative. Montreal has always been a leader in urban forestry as we look forward to furthering the goals of the City’s Plan Canopée with our long-time Montreal partner SOVERDI. Planting and maintaining urban trees improves our communities and we applaud CN for showing such courageous leadership in funding this investment that will make a lasting difference in the Montreal area for generations to come.”
- Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada
“We are proud to be a part of this community and to make this investment in Montreal, home of thousands of CN employees and where CN has been headquartered for nearly a century. For years, CN has worked closely with Tree Canada to plant trees all across the country and we encourage other companies in our city to join us in making a long-term investment in Montreal’s greenspaces. ”
- Sean Finn, Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer of CN
“We welcome CN's sensitivity to the Montreal canopy. In parallel with the major investments and efforts of the City of Montreal in terms of tree planting, the involvement of companies and institutions in greening private and institutional land is not only important for achieving the objectives of the canopy action plan and is consistent with the objectives of the 2016-2020 Montreal Community Sustainability Plan, but it is also crucial for improving the health and quality of life of citizens. Together we make a difference for present and future generations living in a greener, more responsible and sustainable city.”
- Denis Coderre, mayor of Montreal
